The county of Ponthieu has existed since the 11th century with powerful lords linked to the great feudal families. It plays a strategic role between Normandy and Flanders.
Le Marquenterre means  the sea comes in the land,  this  marshy area  was a natural border which was mentioned in 1199 in the charter of old Quend
The territory was contested by the English and the French, notably during the Hundred Years’ War. At the Battle of Crécy in 1346, Edward III’s English army crushed the French troops of Philip VI of Valois.

This county became French in the 15th century
The Revolution marked the end of the Ancien Régime in Ponthieu-Marquenterre, ushering in a more legally egalitarian society.
Land development efforts (dikes, drainage, planting of marram grass) continued despite the unrest.
Five years after the Wright brothers, the Caudron brothers, aviation pioneers born in Favières built their first airplane and flew for the first time.
They flew  from the beach at Le Crotoy. The workshop was in Rue
Their Caudron G3 aircraft was used during the First World War.
